Academic Writing II, Summer 2008
About the Course: In this course, students will develop the analytical and writing skills necessary to tackle assignments similar to those they will encounter in AP English and college-level composition courses. Course work will begin with a review of the research process and its general application to the academic disciplines via a causal analysis research paper in which students will examine a problem and its causes. Students will continue to hone their research skills over the remainder of the term as they read and write about selections of literature. Through discussion boards and live chats, students will learn to analyze the literary elements particular to each genre (nonfiction prose, short fiction, poetry, drama, and the novel). Then, using a multi-step writing process, students will construct essays that argue for a particular interpretation of a work, drawing on textual evidence and scholarly research for support. An integral part of the writing process in this course will involve intensive revision workshops with classmates and instructor working together to examine the effectiveness of structure and content at the sentence, paragraph, and essay levels.
